Two paths. One standard of accountability.

Built for both sides
of the storefront.

Merchants protect their customers. App developers protect the businesses that depend on them. Both deserve a meaningful security standard.

For merchants01 / MERCHANT

Give shoppers
confidence in your store.

A security assessment of your store, its integrations and the practices your team uses to protect customer data.

  • Account access and app permissions
  • Storefront, integrations and data protection
  • Monitoring, recovery and incident readiness

Issued for a named store and its assessed configuration. Covers technical findings and documented operating controls.

For app developers02 / APP

Make security part
of why merchants choose you.

An assessment of your app’s security, from installation and authentication to backend controls, customer data and releases.

  • Authentication, permissions and data isolation
  • Application, API and infrastructure security
  • Secure releases and vulnerability response

Issued for a named app, assessed release and service environment. A certified app does not certify every store that installs it.

What earns the badge.

Security spans people, software and operations. Each area requires evidence, assessment and a reviewer’s decision.

  1. Protect account access

Review owner, staff and collaborator access. Require multifactor authentication for privileged accounts, appropriate permissions, secure recovery and a process for promptly removing access when someone leaves.

  2. Control apps and integrations

Inventory installed apps, scripts and connected services. Review permissions, business purpose, data destinations and vendor ownership. Remove unused access and investigate undeclared integrations.

  3. Secure the storefront

Assess the theme, public pages, forms, transport security and checkout handoff for vulnerable behaviour, injected content, suspicious scripts and unexpected redirects. Review custom components within the agreed testing scope.

  4. Protect customer data

Review where customer data is collected, stored, shared and exported. Check access restrictions, retention, deletion and secret handling. Record which controls the merchant owns and which are provided by Shopify or another vendor.

  5. Detect and recover

Review monitoring and escalation, backups for merchant controlled assets, evidence of recovery exercises and a named incident owner. Maintain daily storefront checks and a process for investigating security alerts.

  6. Maintain the standard

Resolve and retest critical and high severity findings. Document other findings with owners and due dates. Reassess material changes to access, apps, themes or data flows; a monitoring gap over 48 hours triggers suspension and review.

Merchant assessment combines technical checks with evidence of store settings and operating practices. We agree access and testing boundaries in advance, use synthetic data and never request account passwords. Shopify’s underlying platform is treated as a service dependency, not a system we independently certify.

The pass rule: every applicable criterion needs evidence and reviewer approval. No unresolved critical or high severity findings. A missing core security area blocks certification; an exclusion needs a written rationale and cannot be used to bypass a failed requirement. Payment never guarantees a pass.

Assessment references: OWASP Application Security Verification Standard and PCI SSC guidance on payment page security. They inform the criteria; this program does not grant OWASP endorsement or PCI DSS compliance.

From application to evidence

A review, then a decision.

  1. Agree the scope

Confirm ownership, systems, app release, test conditions, evidence access and fees. Written authorisation comes before any assessment.

  2. Gather the evidence

Combine technical security assessment with configuration review and evidence of operating controls. Share findings privately with your team.

  3. Fix and review

Address blocking findings and retest. A named human reviewer records the decision against each applicable criterion.

  4. Issue and maintain

After approval, receive a scoped certificate and a badge linked to its verification record. Maintain the required controls and renew with fresh evidence.

The badge is the beginning

There should always
be a record behind it.

Every issued badge must link to a verification record on our domain. Visitors should be able to see exactly what was reviewed and whether the certificate is still current.

  • Valid for up to 90 days. Renewal requires fresh evidence and review.
  • Changes trigger review. A material change to access, integrations, data flows, infrastructure or an app release suspends the affected scope until reassessed.
  • Status can change. New critical or high severity findings suspend certification. Confirmed misuse or refusal to remediate can lead to revocation.
  • Scope travels with the badge. It may only be used for the named store or reviewed app and environment while the record is active.

What it means.
Where it stops.

Is this an official Shopify certification?

No. This is an independent program offered by Plainsight, operated by Glotomati. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Shopify, and it does not grant Built for Shopify status.

Does the badge mean a store or app is completely secure?

Certification means the assessed store or app met the published security standard and remains subject to maintenance requirements. Security assessments and monitoring reduce uncertainty; they cannot guarantee that an attack will never occur. The public record explains the assessed scope, dates and any limitations.

Does a certified app make my store certified?

No. The app review covers a specific release and configuration. Your store has its own theme, integrations and scripts, so merchant certification requires a separate assessment.

Is this PCI DSS, SOC 2 or privacy certification?

No. This is a separate security certification against Plainsight’s published standard. It does not replace PCI DSS validation, a SOC 2 report or a legal determination of privacy compliance.

What happens if I do not pass?

You receive the findings and the evidence needed to understand them. Fix the blocking issues and request a reassessment. Fees cover assessment work, not a guaranteed badge. Disputed findings can be submitted for a documented reconsideration before a final decision.

How do I apply? What does it cost?

Request an assessment for your store or app. We will agree the scope, fees, monitoring arrangements and assessment terms with you before work begins. The initial conversation is free and creates no commitment.
